Sensational Singapore

Singapore has definitely been placed on our “hope to come back to” list. We didn’t allow ourselves near enough time to explore and appreciate this country, although the budget appreciated it – it is most certainly not an inexpensive place to visit! We really only had one full day, arriving late the first night from Malaysia. Our hotel room was tiny, comfortable and located very near the subway station, making it very convenient.

A full day in Singapore

In true Babin style we hit the road running early in the morning in order to see as much as we could. Once we navigated the subway we headed to Sentosa, described as the “state of fun” and which had been recommended as the place to go when in Singapore. Sentosa includes many beaches, shops, parks, restaurants and activities including Universal Studios, a water park, a sky luge, to name just a few. We simply didn’t have enough time to even scratch the surface on all of these possibilities.

Reece is a bit of a Pokémon fan so he was pleased to discover there was a Live Pokémon event on that weekend, drawing crowds in the thousands to Sentosa. It was interesting (and somewhat strange) to see thousands of people of all ages wandering around with Pikachu hats, cell phone (or phones – many had several) in hand catching exclusive Pokémon.

We spent a bit of time watching these goings on and then set off to wander around the rest of Sentosa, including a stop at the S.E.A Aquarium . This aquarium was world class and one of the best we’ve been to anywhere in the world. We spent several hours watching the mesmerizing sea life.

Following our visit to Sentosa we headed back to the downtown core of Singapore where we had plans to meet some new friends we had met while diving in Australia in February. Arthur suggested we meet at Lau Pa Sat, a hawker centre (or food court), where we were to try a variety of local dishes at great prices. The food was delicious and it was great to chat with the locals to learn a bit more about life in Singapore.

As it was getting late and the kids getting tired we said our goodbyes to our hosts and headed out to check out a few more famous Singapore landmarks. Unfortunately we didn’t have the time or the energy to go inside so we admired from afar the iconic Marina Bay Sands Hotel, which boasts the world largest rooftop infinity pool. The building is magnificent and unlike anything we’ve ever seen. The boys would have loved to swim in the pool but we had neither the time nor the money to do so!

Marina Bay Sands and the supertrees

Our evening was capped off by a walk to observe the colourful supertree groove at the Gardens by the Bay. It was disappointing not to be able to explore these gardens and attractions more…next time!

Exhausted we packed up and hit the hay in preparation for another day, another flight and another country. Up next? China!
